The Story
The Plot
In present-day San Francisco, Officer Taylor, a street hardened training officer, and his rookie partner Jameson respond to a late-night disturbance at a fog-wrapped Victorian mansion long abandoned and left to decay. The house sits like a scar on the neighborhood, its windows blackened, its history buried beneath decades of silence. Neighbors reported movement inside.
What begins as a routine trespasser check spirals into a waking nightmare. Inside the mansion, Taylor is violently attacked by an unseen force. Jameson stumbles out alone, drenched in blood and barely able to speak. When backup arrives, they find no suspect, no weapon, and no evidence of a struggle. Only Jameson remains, shaking, hollow, and unable to explain what happened inside.
Detective Veiga is assigned to the case. Practical and relentless, she dismisses the idea of anything supernatural and pushes forward with a full tactical sweep of the property. But as she and Jameson move deeper into the mansion, reality begins to fracture. Body cam footage captures flickers of shadow, distorted hallways, and brief glimpses of a human-shaped figure that disappears the instant it is seen. Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie teams spread through the house as the investigation collapses into something far worse than a manhunt.
Officers begin to vanish.
Their gear reappears sealed inside evidence bags coated in dust, as if it has been sitting untouched in storage for decades. Radios crackle with broken voices. The fog outside thickens against the windows like something alive, pressing harder with every passing minute.
In the basement, the teams uncover a forgotten crypt hidden beneath the foundation of the house. At its center lies the grave of a child named Lilly Waterford, buried sometime in the mid 1800s. Carved beside her name is a strange symbol etched deep into the stone.
Karl.
Whatever Karl is, it is not a ghost. Not a demon. Not a curse. It is a presence that feeds on memory, identity, and perception itself. The house is no longer a haunted place. It has become a battlefield where reality is rewritten and existence can be erased without warning.
The collapse begins slowly, then all at once.
Officers disappear mid-sentence. Charlie Team dissolves into static over the radio. Jameson watches evidence bags multiply across the floor, each labeled with the names of people who were alive moments earlier. Calls for help never leave the building. The windows no longer show the city outside.
There is no outside anymore.
In the final descent, Jameson and Veiga push deeper into the fog as the mansion closes in around them. The walls breathe. The corridors shift. Voices spill through the radios in broken fragments that sound almost human. As Jameson pieces together the truth of what is happening inside the house, he realizes something far more terrifying than death.
Understanding will not save them.
It only allows them to witness what Karl is taking away.
